Closing at seasons end at Grant Village Campground, six of us were asked to stay another month and move over to Madison Campground for another 3 weeks until November 1st 1994. It was my turn to pick the hike and I chose a walk along the Madison River to watch the Fly Fisherman and the ducks. With out logging our names in at the trail head or inquiring about the Gneiss Creek area we ended up in a burned out area from the fires of 88' in a meadow with only one small charred tree.
While looking around we heard a low rumble and realized it was a herd of forty - three Buffalo ( I know they are rightfully called Bison however, I have never heard of Bison Bill, only Buffalo Bill) moving very quickly. We took refuge behind the little tree while they passed not 10 feet from us. Each Bull stopped starred and huffed at us which eventually broke me into tears from fear.
After they passed Two of us sat down and shook while the third hiking partner went up the trail a little to see if any more were coming. Though it felt like an hour with in ten minutes Bob returned, running in a crouched position telling us to get out of there. When we looked back we saw a Grizzly loping toward Bob who had now caught up to Audry and I. We reached the edge of the trail and Audry yelled to go straight down to the river. I looked back and saw the Bear was gaining on us so I took Audry at her voice of authority and headed straight down toward the Madison River. The Buffalo were not far but to the right and the Bear was right behind us. Once I started down I was told not to look back but I did.
When we reached the Madison River we ran along the edge without stopping for the remaining mile, jumping over the logs and debris along the edge never looking back again. When we reached the parking area. I fell to my knees and thanked God for his help. The Bear had not followed us any further.
We then read the trail information only to find out it was a Buffalo Habitat and a Grizzly migration area. We reported the sighting to the Rangers who said the Bear was more than likely after the smaller Bison and we got in the way. heading down the steep slope to the river was the wisest decision made.
