2004-2005 Winter Season Update
Yellowstone National Park Superintendent Suzanne Lewis announced that the park will open for the winter season beginning Wednesday, December 15, 2004, from 7:00 am to 9:00 pm daily. However, due to minimal snow accumulations throughout the park, certain limitations will be implemented. Oversnow vehicle access will be allowed in some areas and wheeled vehicle or rubber tracked snowcoach access in others. Oversnow, wheeled, and rubber tracked snowcoach vehicle access will be provided by winter commercial permittees only; the general public will not be allowed to drive their personal vehicles into the park. All visitors with reservations at the Old Faithful Snow Lodge will be accommodated.
Oversnow vehicle traffic will be allowed on the South and East Entrance roads to Old Faithful. Access from the West Entrance and Mammoth to Old Faithful will be via wheeled vehicle and rubber tracked snowcoaches. The road from Norris to Canyon and Canyon to Lake will not open due to unsafe conditions.
During the 2004-2005 winter season, the following will be implemented:
The road from the park’s North Entrance at Gardiner, Montana, to the Northeast Entrance at Cooke City, Montana, is the only road open year-round to automobile traffic. The road is subject to temporary closures, and chains or snow tires may be required at any time due to hazardous winter driving conditions.
Visitors are encouraged to call park headquarters at: 307-344-7381 for the latest road and weather conditions.
