The lightning capture was completely by accident rather than on purpose. Also, the lightning was much dimmer (about 50% dimmer) in the actual shot, and enhanced and brightened with Photoshop. It was also up further to the left and top, but I moved it down and cropped the image to create a more pleasant composition. I never could have done this on purpose.

You may notice many of my images are manipulated to one degree or another. That is because I don't consider myself a photographer in the purist sense, but instead, a photo-illustrator. I use a combination of art and photography to enhance the images I capture. Some people think it is cheating...personally I don't care what they think as long as the images satisfy my creativity and as long as those that may purchase my images are pleased as well.

Shutter speed is going to vary overall depending on the lighting conditions you are shooting in. Lightning itself can be dimmed by distance, cloudcover, the amount of lighting visible.
Shoot based on the light you have available, not on trying to guess how bright or dim a lightning bolt may be. You will never be able to guess that since lightning is random by nature.
